The incident happened Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 12, near Riverhead High School.

As the students walked back to campus after lunch, a silver pickup truck began following them, according to Superintendent Augustine Tornatore.

The truck stopped before they reached school grounds, and the driver asked the students for their social media profiles.

“The students ignored the driver and walked onto the school grounds and into the building,” Tornatore said. “The students reported the incident to building administration and district security.”

School officials immediately contacted Riverhead Town Police, who are looking into the incident.

“We want to make sure families are aware of this vehicle traveling in town,” he continued.

“We also want to encourage parents and guardians to speak with their children about the importance of always traveling in groups when walking in town or anywhere on off-campus grounds.”

Neither student was injured during the ordeal. Tornatore did not specify the gender of the students or driver involved.
